Electrical and Electronic engineers employ physics, electronics and electromagnetism to conceptualize and design devices that are powered by or produce electricity. They work on anything from mobile phones to large systems like hydro power plants and aircraft electrical systems. They test prototypes and evaluate as well as improve systems.
Electrical engineers are also involved in projects from idealization to maintenance. They conduct feasibility studies and cost analyses. This kind of exposure to multifaceted duties enables them to specialize in project management, research or consultancy .Electrical engineering projects can include projects such as developing telecommunication systems, lighting and wiring buildings or designing household appliances. Common electrical sub-disciplines include:
- Power
- Control
- Electronics
- Microelectronics
- Signal processing
- Communication
- Instrumentation
- Computers
Nearly every industry has a place for an electrical or electronics engineer, including government, transportation, communications, technology and utilities. Electrical engineers in Kenya must have at least Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a university accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).
The first step towards becoming a registered professional engineer involves registration as a graduate engineer with EBK. This underscores the importance of studying in an accredited university. Then you have to work under the guidance of registered electrical engineers and manage a variety of projects on your own.
So what are the career options for electrical engineering students in Kenya?
Some of the of the major employers of electrical engineers in Kenya include Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Kengen, Ketraco, Safaricom, Electrical Consultancy firms, manufacturing firms, telecommunication and IT firms.
The conventional process is to wait for vacancies in these companies before applying for jobs there. Unfortunately not every vacancy is advertised. Thus it calls for one to send applications using open cover letters specifying that they are seeking for opportunities in the respective companies. Check samples of open cover letters here. That is how I got my current job! It is also prudent to do as many internships as you can before graduation so that you can have a test of different fields. Before my graduation, I had done four internships. The first was at Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (Jan-Mar 2012), the second was Centurion Systems Ltd (Feb- April 2013), the third Safaricom Ltd (Feb-April 2014) and the last internship was at Howard Humphreys Ltd (Feb-April 2015).
The internship at Howard Humphreys Ltd opened my eyes into what is involved in electrical consultancy and I liked the experience and hence my current work. Consultancy environment offers in-depth view and exposure into applications of electrical engineering principles and it could the shortest sure path to realizing professional registration due to the nature and scope of projects one does.
Electrical engineers can also be employed in any other unrelated field. Some have found themselves working in auditing firms, banks, universities and even as accountants. Many also become very successful entrepreneurs. Some of the world’s richest entrepreneurs have electrical engineering background training. The many years (half a decade) of rigorous training prepares them for this.

Some lecturers say that it doesn’t matter how many attachments you have since you’ll still have to be trained in whichever company you end up in. Is this true?
I would also appreciate it if you helped me with contacts of companies where i can apply for attachment beginning January.
Thank you.
Sherick, attachments help you get connections as well as an idea on what is done in various industries. This can at least help you decide on your career path.So industrial attachments are very important.
For example , I was attached at four different companies before I finally settled to work in the electrical consulting industry. During my undergraduate period, I once was attached at Safaricom Ltd(telecommunications), Centurion Systems Ltd(control and automation company), and Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company(maintenance services). After completing my undergraduate studies I worked as an Intern at Howard Humphreys Ltd(a consulting company).I finally settled to work in the consulting industry since it aligns with my career goals. Check your email, I have sent you some useful contacts. All the best…Benard
